News: Toyota's Acceleration Problems Not Electronic
Tuesday February 8, 2011
The Feds released their report today on the cause of the unintended acceleration issues that supposedly plagued Toyotas last year, and as I suspected they found nothing in the electronics that was causing the cars to accelerate suddenly without driver input. I was pretty upset with the media for frying Toyota's reputation based on a few high profile claims, some of which were later proven to be untrue and even fraudulent. It took 10 months for the investigation to be completed, leaving the fantastical stories published at the time a distant memory to most of the journalists who perpetrated them. I'm sure the memory is a little more acute to the Toyota execs who had to deal with the media onslaught.

An Auto Repair Joke, But This One's Good!
Sunday February 6, 2011
There are lots of jokes about auto mechanics, most of them at their expense. Those jokes are, of course, not funny at all. Not a single one of them. I was recently sent a joke by my mother, and this one is funny! So I thought I'd share it. Here goes:
A gynecologist had become fed up with malpractice insurance and HMO paperwork, and was burned out. Hoping to try another career where skillful hands would be beneficial, she decided to become a mechanic. She went to the local technical college, signed up for evening classes, attended diligently, and learned all she could. When the time of the practical exam approached, the gynecologist prepared carefully for weeks, and completed the exam with tremendous skill. When the results came back,
she was surprised to find that she had obtained a score of 150%.
Fearing an error, she called the Instructor, saying, "I don't want to appear ungrateful for such an outstanding result, but I wonder if
there is an error in the grade?" The instructor said, "During the exam, you took the engine apart perfectly, which was worth 50% of the total mark. You put the engine back together again perfectly, which is also worth 50% of the mark." After a pause, the instructor added, "I gave you an extra 50% because you did it all through the muffler, which I've never seen done in my entire career."
Snow Tires versus Summer Tires
Tuesday February 1, 2011
There is lots of debate over whether it's worth it to trade your summer tires for snow tires every winter driving season. I'd love to hear your opinions on this. I'm on the side of buying snow tires as I think they make a huge difference in winter weather handling and overall driving safety. Even my all-wheel-drive vehicles wear snow tires for winter. Even wondered what makes a snow tire a snow tire? See the difference and you'll start to understand how different a snow tire really is.
Make an Impact on Tough Screws or Bolts
Wednesday January 26, 2011
Tough screws, bolts or nuts can be a real show stopper when it comes to getting a repair done, and not in a good way. If you're doing repairs or maintenance on a regular basis, it won't be long before you run into a fastener that won't cooperate. Penetrants and heat are two ways to loosen things up, but another great tool in your arsenal should be this manual impact wrench. A great example of when to use this tool comes up all the time when replacing a worn brake disc. Those Phillips head screws that hold the disc onto the hub almost never come off with a screwdriver. All that heating and cooling that happens in the brake disc make that screw tighter than tight. An impact wrench like this will loosen it right up, and without damaging the screw. Another useful tool, check it out!
